Virgin Atlantic gives it some attitude
Posted in Advertising, Branwell Johnson, Latest reporters' blogs January 5th, 2009 by Branwell Johnson
The new year has barely begun and already there’s a strong contender for ad of the year from Virgin Atlantic and Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R.
The ad, which you can see below, displays all the chutzpah and attitude associated with the Virgin brand that has been missing somewhat in recent times, despite the best marketing efforts of Virgin Media and other Virgin enterprises.
This campaign is to help celebrate the airline’s 25th anniversary and is set in 1984 to the ever-throbbing soundtrack of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Relax. As the cabin crew and pilot stride through an airport there are glimpses of iconic 80s objects and retail brands.
Pedants may quibble over some of the icons featured – Rubik’s Cube and Asteroids were popular waaaay before 1984 – but the ad is really meant to encapsulate some of the glamour and giddiness of the 80s decade as a whole. And if you watch closely you even see someone holding the cover to a Big Country album!
