Michael Grade was his charismatic showboating self at this week’s presentation of ITV’s full year results, even alluding to “sucking a fisherman’s friend” to ribald laughter. And he had reason to be merry with ad revenues staying flat rather than sliding.

Now we have the ITV apology for its abuse of premium phone line services, the broadcaster will hope the lid is back on that particular Pandora’s box. Although Michael Grade’s comments do raise some questions.

So, ITV has pulled ITV Play after the whole interactive premium phone service issue blew up in the face of broadcasters last week. One would like to think that ITV pulled the service because it realised that it – or its contracted suppliers – may have been acting in an underhand and devious way and taking advantage of the good faith of its audience.
