ASA makes a boob?
Posted in Advertising, Creative, Branwell Johnson, Latest reporters' blogs February 1st, 2008 by Branwell Johnson

Ryanair has hit out at the advertising watchdog using typical blustering and colourful language after one of its ads, featuring a model posing as a schoolgirl, was banned. Typical posturing from O’Leary’s airline driven by paranoia and the need for publicity at any cost? Or does Ryanair have a (dubious) point?
I couldn’t do that
Posted in Advertising, Creative January 28th, 2008 by Jo Wallace
“I couldn’t do that.” said the policeman. That’s funny I thought. That line sounds familiar. Except I’m sure it’s not a policeman who’s meant to say it. I remember a TV campaign not so long ago that was entirely based on the premise that the police could do things that even Lennox Lewis was, by his own admission, too sissy to do. So, to hear a policeman say “I couldn’t do that” somewhat shattered my expectations.
Wakey, wakey, rise and shine - we’re running out of time

If you asked your client what would they like more of to do their job better, what do you think they would request? Cash? Red Bull? Faster car? New PA? No, I doubt it.
Christmas – a time to be lazy?
Posted in Advertising, Marketing, Creative, Mel Varley, Latest reporters' blogs December 5th, 2007 by Melinda Varley

Traditions are easy to market as most of us can relate to them and around this time of year there are certainly plenty of them to play with. But has it made marketers lazy?
Will Guinness’ ad stem toppling sales?
Posted in Advertising, Creative, Oliver Milman, Latest reporters' blogs November 12th, 2007 by Oliver Milman
Guinness will be pleased with the media hoopla surrounding its new domino-themed ad campaign, but will it really help topple drinkers’ increasing aversion to beer and stout?
Gold stars and black marks for M&S
Posted in Advertising, Creative, Nikki Preston, Latest reporters' blogs November 7th, 2007 by Nikki Preston

Stuart Rose and his merry helpers must be full of Christmas cheer this week as the retailer seems to have recovered from a poor summer and disappointing quarter to posting pre-tax profits of 11.5 per cent for the first half of 2007.
Ads should entertain
Posted in Advertising, Creative, Mel Varley, Latest reporters' blogs October 31st, 2007 by Melinda Varley

It’s a common fact that advertising should “reflect society” but a lot of advertisers are forgetting that we want to also be entertained by ads.
VCCP a une bonne idée
Posted in Advertising, Creative, Branwell Johnson, Latest reporters' blogs October 16th, 2007 by Branwell Johnson

Good to see the patriotic types at VCCP are not averse to a little baiting of our French cousins. Following the triumph last weekend the agency has doctored its O2 ad that depicted an England player crushing a rose twixt his beefy fingers.
Milkybar Kid – losing originality
Posted in Advertising, Creative, Mel Varley, Latest reporters' blogs October 9th, 2007 by Melinda Varley
It’s so strange that Nestlé should be bringing back its iconic Milkybar Kid after his original appearance in 1961 – just as our office was discussing the lack of originality in ads.
Has this Brecht guy got a box set?
Posted in Advertising, Creative, Branwell Johnson, Latest reporters' blogs October 4th, 2007 by Branwell Johnson

Okay, so kudos for Ken Loach in breaking the mould for the latest HMV “My Inspiration” ad by not referring to a film - but using a quote from a Bertolt Brecht poem is wrong on so many levels.
