PlayStation 3 – should it be Game Over?

Following the call today by games publisher Eidos for Sony to slash the price of its PlayStation 3, is it not just time for everyone to just admit that the console is a dud?
To drastically cut the cost of a product twice within six months of its all-singing-and-dancing European launch is not great news in PR, marketing or any other terms.
So, why should Sony put itself through even more bad headlines? Its console has had its bottom kicked across the globe by arch-rival Wii which, despite its urinary name, is clearly light years ahead in terms of playability and marketing.
Nintendo pulled off a marketing masterstroke by positioning the Wii as ‘fun for all the family’ – replacing the traditional control pads with a wireless device and launching a raft of simple, universally fun games.
Today’s gamer is clearly no longer the stereotypical spotty teen cocooned within a dim bedroom. Sony has been sluggish in recognising this fact and should admit its failings without resorting to panic price cuts.
The games market is still robust, despite claims to the contrary. The hyperbolic launch this week of the Halo 3 game, the last in the trilogy, was feverishly swooped upon by hordes of gaming fans.
Sony’s problem is that it has one fight that it must win – against Nintendo (the Xbox is simply rubbish and not worthy of consideration). Once it has lost this fight, it may as well pack up its toys and go home.
New consoles come along every couple of years, so one failure won’t be terminal for PlayStation, which is still a globally-known brand. Sony should write this one off as a bad experience and get back to the drawing board to lure its lost audience before they are zapped up by Nintendo.

APC UPS man’s comment is....
As I understood it one of Sony’s main hopes for the Playstation 3 was that it would introduce Blu-Ray to households thus providing a platform for their own HD technology. I guess if the console isn’t selling that well then maybe the strategy isn’t working but don’t be deceived into thinking that it is solely about which console is best for gaming.
Also I’m not sure about your statement that the Xbox 360 is ‘rubbish’. It was brought to market earlier than Wii and PS3 and, despite its well documented problems, the tactic seems to have worked in terms of sales. It was never going to outsell a system that was so markedly different and much cheaper (the Wii) but all the top games over the last few months - and the next few months - are coming out on the Xbox.
