New delivery for the Evening Standard

A little part of London life is set to change after nearly 200 years from Monday, as Associated rolls-out branded uniforms for its Evening Standard vendors.
Situated in the capital’s heavy-commuter areas, the picture, sound and, dare I say smell, of the newspaper’s vendors over the years has been something that stands out in the minds of tourists and workers alike.
The move to dress them all with shiny new uniforms is part of an £8 million investment by the publisher, as it attempts to stave-off readers migrating to the Capital’s free rivals.
Many vendors will not only get new matching uniforms, but branded kiosks as well, soon to house the Standard’s new Eros cashless payment system and digital screens for breaking news.
A far cry from the tobacco-stained, sandwich boards of yesteryear.
Apparently the street-sellers were told a few weeks ago, after being given a free breakfast at a swanky London hotel.
I’m assured the news was “widely welcomed” by the aging distributors – we’ll have to see how it pans out, but the Capital’s tube-ways will certainly never be the same.
