Online measurement company Hitwise has published its latest ranking of social networking sites for June 2007. It makes for interesting reading and confirms that Rupert Murdoch’s MySpace no longer heads up the pack.
Bebo now holds top spot with 35 per cent of the market but the biggest growth has been recorded by Facebook, which has exploded by more than 500 per cent since the start of the year.
At current growth trends, the one-time Harvard University site will host the largest network in the world before the year’s end.

I don’t know what all the hype is with Facebook -I’m still firmly in the Myspace camp though I do have a Facebook account as well.
I can be a lot more creative with myspace - I have learned how design web pages with which you can’t with Facebook - also you have sectors on myspace including Myspace MUSIC Which alows me as a musician to showcase my material on a website I can design to look however I want it!

Im not surprised that facebook is becoming so popular, it is much more user friendly than myspace for instance. I have a myspace, facebook, tagged and bebo account, but have found facebook the easiest to get on with. Also on facebook unless u state u want an open account no one can see your profile without beig your friend only your name, unlike bebo and tagged who i get friend requests from total strangers all the time

True enough every social networking site has its own fan base and users who find which site is better suited to their “NEEDS”. Dont forget about online dating and serious dating sites … they too play a role in todays social circle. Traditional online dating is hard to kill simply because the agenda is very specific to what you are looking for…right ?
Lastly it is the hype that is creating the huge users base for all these sites now. Hype comes and goes so be wary … at one time the hype was on Friendster and it became a huge thing, then came MySpace. Now consider MySpace as the Hypermarket of social networking and online dating sites while serious, specific dating sites are the Boutiques that specialize for certain needs. Each has its good and bad points.
The first have mass audiences while the latter have very target specific audiences. FaceBook used to be very very target specific but had to change its directions to go after MySpace.
Maybe we should look at how China “MOP” is moving into Social Networking as well - they have different brands catering to different segments of the market. With a little luck and a correct hype strategy, who knows, MOP may just be the next big thing in China.
