Christmas with the idiot box

It saddens me that on Christmas Day 13.9 million people were watching EastEnders – why is Christmas Day about what you watch on television?

Coming from a hot country where on Christmas Day we swim and play cricket, I can’t bring myself to switch on the box while I’m having my hot roast turkey dinner – it just doesn’t seem right and it isn’t what Christmas is about.

While the UK had a very cold Christmas, it is still no excuse to snuggle up in front of the TV, something that could be done every single night of the year.

I think the day should be about having a good time with the people you’re with – Christmas cheer. Drinking wine over a game of Cranium, singing along to your new CDs or just sitting around the table having a nice chat.

TV ruins the point of Christmas – why sit in silence glued to a box with the people you usually barely manage to see once a month? Watching TV on Christmas Day somehow makes the occasion seem less special, but it’s a ratings war out there for broadcasters and many play the years biggest episodes on the day. Is it wrong to lure in families to TV soaps and movies when we should be sitting around the table reconnecting and celebrating each other and the actual holiday?
